Marrakesh

Marrakesh is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Located in the heart of the fertile, irrigated Haouz plain and at the south of the Tensift River, it is the fourth largest city in the country by population, after Casablanca, Rabat and Fez.

Founded in 1062 by King Youssef Ibn Tachfine, it was the capital of the country under the Almoravid, Almohad and Saadian dynasties, whose reign then extended to North Africa and Andalusia. The historic centre of the city, known as the Medina, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985. The Medina’s buildings and ramparts are made of red clay, which is why Marrakesh is often nicknamed the “red city”. The modern city, for its part, concentrates most of its economic activity in the Guéliz district.

Its geographical location, at the crossroads of the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara, makes Marrakesh a major trading centre of the country. Also known for its rich cultural heritage and winter sports, the city is a must-see tourist capital. It has an international airport and is connected by railway and road to the cities of Safī and Casablanca.
