{"id":13497,"date":"2020-04-14T12:31:30","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T11:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpolicyconference.com\/?p=13497"},"modified":"2020-04-23T17:05:34","modified_gmt":"2020-04-23T16:05:34","slug":"call-for-pandemic-action-to-save-global-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpolicyconference.com\/fr\/call-for-pandemic-action-to-save-global-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for pandemic action to save global economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"story_first_para\">\n<p>Coordinated action by governments across the world to tackle the Coronavirus pandemic and its economic fallout is being demanded in a letter to G20 leaders signed by a group of 165 global leaders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story_image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.relocatemagazine.com\/media\/images\/coronavirus-world-globe_17379_t12.jpg\" alt=\"A globe encircled by hands with the word Coronavirus superimposed upon it\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"story_intro_box\">\n<div class=\"story_info_strip\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"story_author_pic float_left_generic\" src=\"https:\/\/www.relocatemagazine.com\/media\/images\/dsapsted_2568.jpg\" alt=\"David Sapstead\" width=\"51\" height=\"51\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"story_author_name float_left_generic\">David Sapsted<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"story_date float_left_generic\">7 APRIL 2020<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story rteCopy\">\n<p>The letter, whose signatories include 92 former heads of government from every continent as well as prominent statesmen, business leaders and academics, calls for \u00ab\u00a0immediate, internationally-coordinated action to address our deepening global health and economic crises caused by COVID-19\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"beta\">Global task force and emergency funding urged to prevent a second wave of infection<\/h2>\n<p>It urges the establishment of a global task force with executive powers to organise the fight against the pandemic, with $8 billion of emergency funding to prevent a second wave of the outbreak in poor countries, particularly those in Africa, Asia and Latin America.The group also urges the G20 to adopt a $185 billion programme of debt relief for the poorest countries and to increase funds available to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"beta\">COVID-19 will persist if nothing is done in African, Asian and Latin American cities<\/h2>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0The economic emergency will not be resolved until the health emergency is effectively addressed: the health emergency will not end simply by conquering the disease in one country alone, but by ensuring recovery from COVID-19 in all countries,\u201d says the letter.\u00a0\u00bbAll health systems \u2013 even the most sophisticated and best funded \u2013 are buckling under the pressures of the virus.\u00a0\u00bbYet if we do nothing as the disease spreads in poorer African, Asian, and Latin American cities and in fragile communities which have little testing equipment, ventilators, and medical supplies, and where social distancing and even washing hands are difficult to achieve, COVID-19 will persist there and re-emerge to hit the rest of the world with further rounds that will prolong the crisis.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2 class=\"beta\">Global economic response needed to avoid global economic depression<\/h2>\n<p>On the crisis confronting the global economy, the letter says, \u00ab\u00a0Much has been done by national governments to counter the downward slide of their economies. But a global economic problem requires a global economic response.\u00a0\u00bbOur aim should be to prevent a liquidity crisis turning into a solvency crisis, and a global recession becoming a global depression. To ensure this, better coordinated fiscal, monetary, central bank, and anti-protectionist initiatives are needed.
