{"id":15279,"date":"2022-05-02T16:10:22","date_gmt":"2022-05-02T15:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpolicyconference.com\/?p=15279"},"modified":"2022-05-02T16:10:22","modified_gmt":"2022-05-02T15:10:22","slug":"carl-bildt-time-running-out-to-reach-agreement-on-iran-nuclear-deal-warn-former-diplomats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpolicyconference.com\/fr\/carl-bildt-time-running-out-to-reach-agreement-on-iran-nuclear-deal-warn-former-diplomats\/","title":{"rendered":"Carl Bildt: \u00ab\u00a0Time running out to reach agreement on Iran nuclear deal, warn former diplomats\u00a0\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-field-subhead\">Letter signed by former European officials says it would be a &lsquo;grave mistake&rsquo; to let opportunity to defuse the nuclear crisis slip<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-main-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_page\/public\/images-story\/000_9963E6.jpg?itok=Z8rUicxO\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"934\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-cutline\">Delegation members from the parties to the Iran nuclear agreement &#8211; Germany, France, Britain, China, Russia and Iran \u2013 attend a meeting in Vienna as they try to restore the deal, on 1 May 2021 (AFP)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>More than 40 former European diplomats urged the United States and Iran to reach an agreement on the Iran nuclear deal, warning that ongoing talks were heading to a \u00ab\u00a0corrosive stalemate devolving into a cycle of increased nuclear tension\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>In an open\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanleadershipnetwork.org\/group-statement\/european-diplomats-and-politicians-express-concern-over-stagnating-iran-nuclear-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>\u00a0published on Tuesday, the 46 former diplomats, including former Sweden Prime Minister\u00a0Carl Bildt\u00a0and former UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, said\u00a0US President Biden and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi needed to demonstrate more flexibility to defuse the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0At a time when transatlantic cooperation has become all the more critical to respond against Russia\u2019s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, for US and European leaders to let slip the opportunity to defuse a nuclear crisis in the Middle East would be a grave mistake,\u00a0\u00bb the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>The former diplomats said there were two possible scenarios. In one, the US shows \u00ab\u00a0decisive leadership and requisite flexibility\u00a0\u00bb to resolve the issues with the disagreement with Tehran. And in the second, both parties \u00ab\u00a0enter a state of corrosive stalemate\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0For its part, Iran should not expect a nuclear deal to address broader areas of disagreement between Tehran and Washington.
