Dark clouds, both geopolitical and geoeconomic, bear down upon us \u2013 some unleashing great pain and suffering on the people below. Energy prices are spiking. Inflation is accelerating. Governments, as in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--a content--a\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" title=\"\" data-v-6b4d63ed=\"\" data-v-53f1434e=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"936a4635-34be-46f1-8c5e-c09276e51468\" data-entity-type=\"taxonomy_term\" data-entity-bundle=\"topics\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/sri-lanka?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-v-6b4d63ed=\"\"><span class=\"text\" data-v-6b4d63ed=\"\">Sri Lanka<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">, are falling. The burning question our world now faces is a simple one: can we turn things around?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-531d9f7f=\"\">\n<div data-v-1b0bea00=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-53f1434e=\"\" data-v-1b0bea00=\"\">The short answer is yes, we can. In our modern world, sound public policies based on logical reasoning and good scientific evidence could solve many of our problems. There\u2019s only one catch: it would require all major countries to perform equally major U-turns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-1b0bea00=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-53f1434e=\"\" data-v-1b0bea00=\"\">In theory, democratically elected governments have enough innate flexibility to perform such a manoeuvre.
