{"id":16427,"date":"2023-03-24T15:59:54","date_gmt":"2023-03-24T14:59:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpolicyconference.com\/?p=16427"},"modified":"2023-03-24T15:59:54","modified_gmt":"2023-03-24T14:59:54","slug":"cop28-must-target-equitable-energy-transition-uae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpolicyconference.com\/fr\/cop28-must-target-equitable-energy-transition-uae\/","title":{"rendered":"COP28 must target \u2018equitable\u2019 energy transition: UAE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldpolicyconference.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/alarabia.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.worldpolicyconference.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/alarabia.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"86\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>11 December, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9 December, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>COP28 must target \u2018equitable\u2019 energy transition: UAE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next year\u2019s UN climate talks in the United Arab Emirates must work towards a just and equitable energy transition, the host country, seeking a gradual move from fossil fuels, said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The UAE is one of the world\u2019s biggest oil producers.<\/p>\n<p>It wants to \u201cbring diverse and different thoughts to the table from all around the world and in particular the countries of the global south\u201d, said Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow we manage to deal with a just energy transition by also ensuring prosperity and stability for people around the world, how we manage to do that in a manner that\u2019s equitable\u201d is the issue, she told the World Policy Conference of political, business, academic and other leaders in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with AFP in July, the UAE\u2019s Minister of Climate Change and Environment Mariam Almheiri insisted the world is \u201cnot ready\u201d to switch from hydrocarbons, despite the havoc being unleashed by global warming.<\/p>\n<p>Sharply higher fuel costs triggered by sanctions on Russia for invading Ukraine prompted Western countries to demand higher oil production this year, Almheiri pointed out at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Al Hashimy said the UAE-hosted COP should discuss the climate challenge and energy transition \u201cin light of new geopolitical rivalries that could jeopardise international cooperation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The international community largely agrees that climate change poses an existential threat to the planet and future of mankind.
