Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 membre de la Cour d\u2019appel des Etats-Unis pour le troisi\u00e8me circuit (2003-2005). Avant de devenir juge f\u00e9d\u00e9ral, il \u00e9tait adjoint du procureur pour la division criminelle du D\u00e9partement am\u00e9ricain de la Justice. Il a re\u00e7u de nombreux prix et deux doctorats honoris causa.
